Gelco Damper Repair Nationwide

Every visit starts with

Level 1 sweep and inspection to the NFPA 211 annual standard - flue, crown, cap, and flashing checked and photographed

Worth knowing

Chimney sweep logs do not sweep chimneys. They loosen some creosote - which then falls where a brush and vacuum still have to collect it.

Gelco Damper Repair: The Ashburn Owner’s Guide

Gelco damper repair in Ashburn typically runs $285-$510 installed, depending on whether we’re replacing the cable assembly, the lid plate, or the full frame. We stock Gelco-compatible top-sealing damper parts on our trucks, so most repairs are done in a single visit. The way most Ashburn homeowners find out their Gelco damper failed is a draft that wasn’t there last winter, or a utility bill that climbed a month or two after the first cold snap. Sometimes it’s rain they can hear hitting metal inside the flue. Either way, the damper is doing the one job it has: keeping the chimney closed when the fireplace isn’t running, and it’s stopped doing it.

Which Gelco Models This Applies To

Gelco top-sealing dampers have been installed in Northern Virginia homes since the late 1990s, and we see three main configurations in the field. The original Ladapter series uses a round or square cast lid sized to the flue tile, typically 13″×13″ or 13″×18″ for the masonry chimneys common in Ashburn’s Broadlands and Ashburn Farm neighborhoods. The later Gelco cable-drive models use a braided stainless cable with a coil spring that mounts inside the firebox, and these are the units where we most often replace the cable and pulley. There is also the less common Gelco lock-top style with a side mount that works on chimneys lacking a flat crown. Here is the compatibility gotcha that costs people time: a Gelco lid that fits the opening is not automatically matched to the cable length you need. The cable must be cut to the distance from the damper lid down to the mount point, which varies by chimney height. When we arrive in Ashburn, we measure the flue opening and the drop length before pulling any part off the truck. For Gelco units specifically, we default to OEM lids and plates, because the hinge geometry and seal compression are specific to the series. Aftermarket cables are fine when properly sized, but the lid itself should be Gelco.

Signs Your Gelco Damper Repair Is Failing

Signs Your Gelco Damper Repair Is Failing
  • Cold air dropping from the fireplace when it’s not in use. This is the simplest failure to diagnose: the damper is supposed to seal against the top of the flue, and when the cable stretches or the lid warps, outside air comes down. If you can feel a draft standing in front of the firebox with the fire cold, the seal has failed.
  • The damper handle or lever won’t move, or moves with no resistance. With cable-drive Gelco models, that usually means the cable has snapped inside the conduit or detached from the lid. No resistance means the cable is no longer connected to anything. It happens more in Ashburn because our freeze-thaw cycles cause small amounts of water to sit in the cable conduit and eventually corrode the wire.
  • A damp or musty smell from the fireplace after rain. A Gelco top-sealing damper should shed most rain. When the seal at the lid edge degrades, enough water enters to wet the smoke shelf and produce that smell within a day or two. It is rarely a large volume of water, but repeated moisture cycles compound.
  • Rust staining on the firebox floor or on the damper hardware. Water making it past a failed lid will carry soot and creosote residue down the flue and deposit it as a brown or black stain. If you see new rust on the Gelco mount bracket, that is a secondary sign the lid above isn’t sealing.
  • The damper cable is visibly frayed or sagging. On Ashburn homes with the mount inside the firebox, you can often see the cable run. Fraying near the pulley or the handle means replacement is imminent, not optional. A sagging cable, rather than a taut one, tells you the spring tension has relaxed and the lid is likely not closing fully.

Replacement Cost & What’s Included

Here is the pricing picture for Ashburn, in writing, before anyone schedules:

  • Damper cable assembly replacement: $285-$380 installed. Includes new stainless cable, pulley hardware, adjustment to proper tension, and a lid seal check from the roof.
  • Lid plate replacement (Gelco-compatible): $340-$460 installed. Includes removing the old lid, installing the correctly sized Gelco lid, new seal, cable retention, and full operation check.
  • Full Gelco damper unit replacement (lid, mount, cable, handle): $430-$510 installed. For units where the frame or mount has cracked, or the original unit is beyond economical repair.

The range depends on flue size, whether we can access the crown from the roof or need a ladder, and the condition of the existing mount. Every quote includes the part, the labor, the written scope, and the written warranty before we start. Clause 1 of the Haven Standard requires it. The warranty on our damper repair work in Ashburn is one year on parts and labor under the 365-Day Done Right Promise, and if something is not right in that window, we make it right. No extra charge to come back.

What an owner can safely check: whether the handle moves, whether the cable is visibly broken, and whether you can see rust or staining in the firebox. Those observations help us diagnose before we arrive. What you should not do is get on an Ashburn roofline to inspect or replace a lid, especially this time of year when frost makes composite shingles slick and the crown edge is a long way down. Also, a top-sealing damper lid is under spring tension when mounted. That spring is not a garage door spring, but it is strong enough to catch a finger or snap a cable end back if mishandled. Our position is straightforward: check what you can from inside, document it, and call us. Corrine Halstead and our crew carry the right lid sizes and cable stock for Gelco units, and the job is usually under an hour once we are on site. Call (240) 220-9412 and we will give you a written quote before any work begins.
